The KitchenAid was invented in 1919 by Herbert Johnson, an engineer at the Hobart Corporation. In 1914 he observed a baker hand kneading fresh dough and thought of an innovative way to make this job a lot easier and less tiring for the bakers. From there he designed the H-5 mixer, a commercial mixer which was found in every US navy ships kitchen. In 1919 the first domestic model of the KitchenAid was made and over the century that this product has been selling it has seen some changes, but the core essence of the product has remained the same- precision, power and durability.

Versatility

The KitchenAid comes with several different mixing attachments, each with their own purposes; the wire whip, intended to be used for whisking egg whites or whipping creams, the flat beater, meant to mix cake batters or cookie doughs, the dough hook, used for kneading pizza pasta or bread doughs and finally the flex edge beater, this is similar to the flat beater but has a spatula edge to scrape the sides of the dough, ideal for mixing icings.

The KitchenAid also comes with a pouring shield, which allows the user to pour their ingredients into the mixture, whilst still being mixed, without having to worry about anything splashing back at them.

As well as these mixing attachments and the pouring shield, KitchenAid also sell other attachments such as food processers or pasta cutters, again proving how versatile this kitchen appliance is.

Iconic Design

Everyone knows what a KitchenAid looks like, it's an iconic kitchen appliance. Due to its sleek design, the mixer is used as a feature of your kitchen and not hidden away like a handheld mixer or a whisk. The vibrant range of colours also allows the users to choose a mixer that goes with their kitchen aesthetic.

I like to bake in my spare time and find that my KitchenAid (over 10 years old and still working perfectly) makes mixing everything so much easier and faster rather than mixing by hand or using a handheld mixer. Also as the mixer is made from plastic and the attachments and mixing bowls are dishwasher safe, making it very easy to clean, another great aspect of the product. Before writing this blog I was not aware of the other attachments for the front of the mixer, so I will definitely be giving those a try soon. Overall, I think the KitchenAid is an example of a great, timeless product that has remained purposeful for over a century.
